Music Monday for sure.

It looks like we are pulling a late one tonight. We spent most of the day tracking mandolin and it seems we are making some real progress on song number 3. A few minutes ago Ysanne Spevack picked up her Metal String Machine and was getting ready to lay down some space symphony tones when out of nowhere a 12 string banjo appeared in the control room and Billy started jamming on it. So, it looks like we are going to be here for a long, long time tonight especially if these crazy instrument keep popping out of thin air but, you gotta love the magic! My guess is we will be getting back to Q&A tomorrow on Tech Tuesday. Mr. Mark Tulin A.K.A. Professor Psychedelic will be asking the fan generated questions via web cam from Los Angeles, CA. This should be fun and technical too. Sooooo, sleep tight and I'll find you tomorrow morning with coffee in hand.
Love K.B.

  2. Put the banjo somewhere on it! DO IT! Even if it's just a single layer somewhere.

  3. That's funny, the twelve string banjo sounds kind of like a sitar.

  5. Hey Kerry,

I'd like to recommend that the band cover "Welcome to the Void" by Morgen on the next tour.

    Here's a link.

Very cool psychedelic tune from the late 60s. I could see Billy and the band tearing it up.

Thanks! Love checking out the blog every day.

  7. I love the sound of the instruments I am seeing. If this is indicative of what is to come than we are in for a real treat!

As always thank you Kerry and thank you to everyone in studio, especially those who helped out with bringing us the eye candy and sounds!

  9. OK, I'll repeat my Tech Tuesday Qs just in case:

What 2" tape are you guys recording to? Looks like a GP9 reel?
    What speed? 15ips? 30ips?

  10. I love the fact you guys are bringing out all these unusual instruments. Here's hoping for a really rich, sonically deep and interesting record :) Can't wait. Keep up the good work guys. The experimental spirit that seems to be coming out speaks volumes to me.

  12. I just bought a sound-activated evil-pumpkin lighted T-shirt! It's black with a LED-style meter readout in the shape of a symmetrical pumpkin with an evil grin. >:)

  14. Awesome news today (again), it's good to think that all these instruments will bring differents atmospheres to the songs. Great !
It's getting harder and harder to wait till the release of the first songs !

  15. ha! That banjo is money! Billy needs to explore that seemingly great natural folk aptitude that was teased in those djali zwan shows!

  16. I'm lovin' news of the banjo and mandolin action! It makes me want to go dance at a bluegrass festival...or just break out my mando from the closet and give it some love :)

  17. Got one more question for Tech Tuesday:

    Request:
Can you guys PLEASE release this stuff through one of those high def audio stores (like Naim Label) in downloadable 24/96 so I can make my own DVD-Audio from it?

    Justification:
After all, you guys wouldn't dream of recording to 192kbps would you? No, you guys have escaped the record companies and their self defeating relegation of music to shite....so it's your opportunity to elevate the joy of listening to music to beyond that of 30 year old CD technology!!!

    More Justification:
At 8 times the resolution of 16/44.1, I'll pay 8 times more if I have to!

  18. That's a nice idea SPatrick... but what I'm really hoping is that the compression and gain isn't cranked to the max to compete in the whole loudness war thing... no clipping please please please when mixing/mastering! :)

  22. Maybe the folk fairy godmother left those instruments for you guys in the night...
I love violins & mandolins and it's cool seeing Billy playing banjo. It reminds me of him breaking out the harmonica on the dvd.
Thanks for this blog, Kerry...it is highly awesome.
You guys have a beautiful day!

  23. Is it possible that the album may grow larger? As in there might end up being more than 44 songs?

  24. i see that banjo sound going through the synthesizer, is this even possible?

  25. joaopedro7 - are you talking about that lighted thing in front of the banjo? I am not sure, but I think that is a peterson stroboflip

  26. I like what I'm hearing so far. But how high in the mix will the vocals be this time? With Zeitgeist they kind of swamped the music.

  27. oh god. Banjo. i was excited about the new stuff given the recent live outings and plans/artwork etc but here we go.
if you want to create country blues music sack off the pumpkins and start up a bluegrass outfit or summit. We dont want any of them my dogs left me and my wifes howling at the moon jobbies - ah yehhhharh bwoy phhhhhhhh-ting!
of course i may be worrying about nothing - and billy may be planning a project without the restrictions of the last decade e.g. if a song needs distortion and solos pop em in if it needs piano/mellotron in it goes, dont be afraid to scream if the song needs a bit of that - like wot made mellon collie the greatest rock/experimental album eva
keep it up - i think
