I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round. I really love to watch them roll. Oh my, we got the tape machine up and rolling today...
Call me crazy but the sound of great music recorded in the analog format makes me smile and everything in the world just seems better.

Mr. Mark Tulin flew in from LAX a few hours ago and boy are his arms tired, but we are putting him straight to work
anyway. It looks like he will playing a 1963 Fender Jazz bass through a 1963 Ampeg Portaflex flip-top bass
amp... Why? Because, well,
it just sounds awesome! This has nothing to do with the fact that I was born in 1963. Or maybe it does :)

Billy is playing a 1961 Les Paul Junior Special through a Sound City Studio 20 amp, truly amazing sounding.

So, I am very happy that we got everything in its sonic place today and we are ready to dig into the serious tracking tomorrow.

Sending love from the city by the lake. K.B.

Would be interested to know a bit more about Billy's rig. Obviously it's not the same behemoth that he toured with for Zeitgeist, but what sort of effects/rack gear/other amp heads is he using?

can't wait to hear the new material.

you people realize that the awful sound on zwan was analog too right?

analog tape != good sounding final result. nothing billy's put out since machina has sounded any good except American Gothic and the DVD, it just happens that those are the two most recent releases so I'm not going to tell you to let your hopes down.

Thanks for these great news ! And it's very interesting to learn more about the gear used during the studio process.
And who knows, we might get a sample from the studio sessions ? Would be nice just to hear 30 seconds of that new sound ! Anyway, keep on the good work !

Those Portaflex's are the best bass amps ever. What model is it? I was playing thru a b-15s on guitar and bass and it was heaven.

Awesome!

It's great to see that Kevin and Mark have joined the group! Spirits in the Sky was just wonderful. Not to impose any expectations on the new SP material, but the prospect of, say, the use of a mandolin, or Tulin's sick bass riffs, really excites me!

Nice machines! Someday I'll be at a place where I'll know how to use them. Haha.

good omen that you guys are doing it on tape...I thought some of the Spirits stuff harkened back to the MCIS sound just a wee bit...I really need to fix my turn tables so I can listen to that album again on vinyl

Analog rules. I going to one day take out my old Tascam 4 and 8 track recorder and use it again. It's hard to find Type II tapes, but it a good thing I bought about 300 of them. And I don't agree with brendo_91. Zwan was the best thing put out by Billy recently. I think he got to go back to doing stuff like that and old Pumpkins.

joshua, I'm not talking about quality of MUSIC.

i'm talking about audio quality. the thing sucks. it's smashed to hell and back, it's more distorted than californication, more than st anger, more than death magnetic.

which kind of ruins the experience for me. ever heard the rough mixes or premasters that made it out from that album? much nicer audio quality.
