Billy Corgan stated on his facebook page(RIP) that he would pay $20,000 No Questions Asked for the return of his "GISH" Stratocaster guitar.(pictured above) At the time of its disappearance the guitar was Yellow with hand painted multi-colored "flowers" If you have any info regarding this guitar please leave it in the comment section of this blog. Thanks to Grunge Report.netKROQ.comWXRT.com and all the other media outlets that have been helping spread the word.
Pictured below is Billy's backup guitar from the same time period. THIS IS NOT THE GUITAR THAT WAS STOLEN!
I bought this guitar around 1989 or 1990 because I needed a spare for playing live, and wanted an almost identical sound to go with my main one at the time which was an early 70's Strat (yellow that I hand painted). THAT guitar was the featured guitar on Gish and was probably my favourite guitar ever. It was stolen in 1992 out the back door of St. Andrews Hall in Detroit and has never resurfaced. I would still pay good $ to get that guitar back, no questions asked. So THIS guitar is the last remnant of that period of my life, and I really cherish it. It was painted ala Eric Clapton's cream era guitar by my friend crazy Nick. As you can see it's taken a bit of a beating back from a time when I used to throw my guitars around like candy. The history of this guitar is its a 1978 'bullet' Strat with the flat pickups (as opposed to the staggered pole pieces). I preferred these pickups at that time because it allowed for maximum gain by running the pickups up really close to the strings. This guitar does have some recording history of note, as it was the guitar I would use for solos as it seemed to just have more cut than the main one. So all the solos on Gish were done with this guitar. It has a vicious attack as you can hear on songs like 'Tristessa', 'I Am One', 'Rhinocerous', and 'Siva'. I'm fixing this guitar up now and I hope to use it again soon. I've started using more old-school amplification, like my 1969 Marshall Super Tremolo head (currently ailing) so guitars with this kind of cut are what I'm looking for. It makes me laugh that I'm sort of back to where I started when it comes to gain and attack. I see the BC Dimarzio pickups as more the modern application of gain, and the older type pickups as a more vintage approach to the use of gain.
Smashing Pumpkins: Beatweek 2010 Indie Artist of the Year
RAD!
December 22, 2010
We promise this is the first and last time we ever give our “Indie Artist of the Year” award to a world-famous band which has spent most of its existence on a major label. But not only have the Smashing Pumpkins parted ways with their label, frontman Billy Corgan and crew have walked away from the entire music industry model as we know it. Not only are they giving away every song from their new forty-four song album Teargarden By Kaleidyscope, they’re doing so as each song is finished. One MP3 at a time, the Smashing Pumpkins are helping rewrite the blueprint for being an indie artist. Here is Beatweek’s conversation with Billy Corgan.
Wow, It has been an insane week at Coldwater Studio and it's only Wednesday night! On Monday and Tuesday The Smashing Pumpkins came in to finish recording the next two Teargarden by Kaleidyscope songs. Billy, Nicole and Mike recorded backing vocals that sound amazing. I have never heard big backing vocals on a Smashing Pumpkins song, it is a really cool new direction for the band. I would like to tell you what songs we recorded but then Billy would have to kill me and I am not yet ready to meet my maker.
Side Note: I have been in the recording studio for almost every SP record and never have I seen such positive band chemistry. It is very refreshing.
Here is a candid video interview from Dec 4th where Billy talks about the future of The Smashing Pumpkins.
On Wednesday the incredibly talented Damien Youth came in to finish recording a song with David J. During dinner break we all talked about our first bands. I laughed inside as I told everyone at the table the name of my first band (St. Vitus' Dance) this of course is the name of a Bauhaus Song.... coincidence?
Here is a video of the group listening to the playback of Damien's song.
Please check out David J's Kickstarter page and be a part of his new record.
After songs are recorded and mastered we need to cut a Lacquer plate for each side of the album. This is where the music is converted to analogue signals. The Lathe cuts a spiral groove using a vibrating cutting stylus. The precise groove is cut across an aluminum disc covered with a plastic coating and is cut at a speed of 33 1/3 or 45rpm.
"i hope everyone is having a great day today. i've got a few more days off before we head to Texas to start this last little bit of touring, and then off for the holidays (yay!). we've got big plans in the works for next year, including new Teargarden plans (different than 2010/change of direction/plans/a positive change)."
A few days ago Billy set up a facebook account and has already made numerous posts: including his thoughts on the S P Metro show on Dec 2, 2000 Go To Billy's Facebook Page
Radio Stations, Magazines, Rock Bloggers, ETC... If you need a CD quality audio file of the new Smashing Pumpkins song "Tom Tom" please send an email to kerry@starryrecords.net and I will send you a link.
I JUST GOT WORD FROM THE PEOPLE THAT HANDLE THE ONLINE SALES FOR THE PUMPKINS THAT VOLUME ll IS SELLING OUT FAST AND WILL BE COMPLETELY SOLD OUT SOON. GET IT WHILE YOU CAN!
Things are CRAZY right now and I like it that way. The Ray Davies (feat. Billy Corgan) song that was recorded at Coldwater Studio came out on November 6th, 2010. It sounds very cool and you should check it out here. Kevin Dippold did a great job engineering the track. The Pumpkins are in the midwest right now recording new songs for Teargarden By Kaleidyscope and Billy seems very excited about the way the recordings are progressing. The band will be hitting the road again soon, tour dates can be found here. I look forward to checking out the California SP shows in December.
Today, November 8, 2010 I am finishing 2 Smashing Pumpkins mixes from the Spin 25 show in New York. The show was completely ass kicking and the band sounds great. Here is a review from that night. I am not sure when the show will broadcast on Fuse.TV but as soon as know I will get the info up on this blog and there will be announcements on the SP Facebook, website, twitter, etc..
Later this week I plan on uploading KB song #3 "Familiar" look for the song at bandcamp.com Thursday 11/11 If you haven't checked out Song #1 and #2 here they are.
This week also begins the first week of preproduction for the new Electric Prunes and The Strawberry Alarm Clock songs that Billy and I will be putting out on StarTone Records Inc. These songs have us all very excited.
Over at Starry Records Pre-orders will start very soon for The Fancy Space People vinyl. The first 100 will be cut in white vinyl. There will only be 99 available because I am keeping 1 for myself. In the mean time please check out the Fancy Space People in the digital world.
The "Album" is called "Vibration" thanks to Benjamin @Exclaimed. He came up with the name after I asked via Twitter if anyone had a good idea for the album title. I like it so..... "Vibration" is the name for now. Thanks Benjamin.
Song #2 -
"Sugarcane Dance" is a creepy dance song about the underground nightclubs in Chicago. The story is true the names have been changed 2 protect the guilty. This song should be listened to with headphones or on a system with very large speakers at loud volume.
I have a bunch of songs that I started over the years and just never finished. Last night I was thinking how lame it is that these songs are just sitting on a fucking hard drive doing nothing. So I am going to put them up on bandcamp for whoever wants them. My hope is to upload 2 songs a week. Here is song #1 Cure Me - A song about my love of pop, The Cure, and a time machine. Bye 4 Now, K
The Fancy Space People began when the unlikely duo of Germs drummer DON BOLLES and quirky solo chanteuse NO-RA KEYES, started receiving communications from invisible entities claiming to be from Fancy Space , asking them to present their presumably benevolent messages to the people of Earth, secreted within neo-classic rock tunes. Told that they were chosen not so much for any musical talent they might possess, but more because they would fit into the elaborate space outfits, Don and Nora, neither of whom had much going on at the time, anyway, readily agreed.
The aliens assured them that their proposed role didn't involve any such unsavory or strenuous activities as cattle mutilation or crop circle construction. All they had to do was play the songs and wear the outfits. The outfits ended up looking positively stellar, indeed, and the audio hieroglyphs - montages of familiar rock cliches from the 60s, 70s, and 90s, what we on Earth might call songs - turned out to be surprisingly fresh and new sounding; fun, even! Soon, 5 other musical miscreants were recruited into the cult to play the other instruments and wear the remaining space suits, and Fancy Space People was born.
That was 4 years ago - nowadays their often sold-out shows, the so-called Fancy Space Rituals, incorporate film, video, smoke, lights, crazy costumes and their uniquely derivative Pleiadian Power Pop to great effect, putting hundreds of bedazzled fans into ecstatic, dervish like states, complete with lots of spontaneous dancing and people singing along with their lighters in the air at venues all over California, where the band live and record in a top-secret compound in an industrial area just south of Los Angeles. Their songs range from moody Mellotron hymns to Glitter Rock stompers, Snow Pop to Psychedelic Space Epics, 60s Girl Group to 70s Krautrock, and remind one of the best of T Rex, Bowie, Abba, Sparks, and even Amon Duul II.
Already they have attracted such enthusiastic collaborators as BILLY CORGAN of the Smashing Pumpkins, MARS WILLIAMS from the Psychedelic Furs, PAUL ROESSLER (Screamers, Nina Hagen Band) and Belgian Synth Witch SHAZZULA NEBULA. Their eponymous debut vinyl EP was mixed and recorded by KERRY "STUDIODOG" BROWN (The Smashing Pumpkins, Greg Dulli, Courtney Love, Kelley Deal, Catherine, The Frogs, Jessica Simpson) & KEVIN DIPPOLD (The Smashing Pumpkins) and produced by DON BOLLES. It features the groups theme song Fancy Space People, which seems to advocate saving the Earth by somehow eliminating the humans, Pleiadian Youth, a song celebrating and also warning against the new exoteric invisible nation, and the hauntingly ethereal Pyramids Shoot Golden Rays, a song that accompanies a popular Youtube video by No-Ra that reminds one of a new-age sci-fi Kenneth Anger film.
Can a ridiculously attired Los Angeles Glitter rock space cult, channeling cryptic messages from Fancy Space, really save the Earth and usher in a new Golden Age? Maybe yes; maybe no. But whatever the case, if you think you might enjoy a bunch of heroic bubble-glam pop anthems, delivered with an ass-kicking punk rock authority and an almost Crass-like dedication to an alien agenda, then a close encounter with Fancy Space People will at very least help to make the remainder of our planets juggernaut into the abyss a whole lot more fun and entertaining for you than it otherwise might have been.
Listen for free to Fancy Space People here:
We just finished the artwork for the 12 inch vinyl and it is going to press early next week!!!
Pre-orders will start soon via Starry Records Inc.
DON and NO-RA are available for interviews. Please email Kerry Brown at
The Smashing Pumpkins have created one of the most acclaimed bodies of work in musical history and have sold more than 30 million albums. Formed in Chicago in 1988, they released Gish, their influential debut in 1991, which was followed by more platinum and multi-platinum albums including the nine-time platinum Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness and the four-time platinum Siamese Dream as well as the platinum certified 1998 album Adore. The pivotal group’s many hits defined the alternative music era and continue to resonate on modern rock radio, influencing a whole new generation. The Pumpkins returned in 2007 with their gold-certified and acclaimed sixth album Zeitgeist, which entered the charts at Number 2 in the U.S. and in the Top Ten internationally.
Since their triumphant return to the stage in 2007, the Pumpkins have headlined some of the biggest events around the globe including the Reading Festival, Rock Am Ring, and the V fest. In 2008, the band was inducted into Hollywood’s RockWalk. Their first post-major label release was the song “Superchrist,” issued via the Guitar Center CD Fresh Cuts Vol. 2. They subsequently recorded the song--the modern rock hit--“G.L.O.W.” for the Guitar Hero® World Tour game, marking the first time a band has recorded a new song exclusively for the franchise. In November 2008, the band released their first live DVD, If All Goes Wrong. In December 2009 The Smashing Pumpkins began releasing Teargarden By Kaleidyscope, a 44-song work with songs being released online one at a time for free (4-song physical EPs will be made available as the songs are released). The group’s BILLY CORGAN has said the new music “harkens back to the original psychedelic roots of The Smashing Pumpkins; atmospheric, melodic, heavy, and pretty.” The Smashing Pumpkins Tour Dates Date City/State Venue On Sale Sep 10 Seattle, WA SODO SOLD OUT Sep 11 Portland, OR Wonder SOLD OUT Sep 14 Spokane, WA Knitting Factory NOW! The Dresden Dolls Kick Off Fall US Tour With Special 10th Anniversary Halloween Show in NYC!
After a long hiatus, The Dresden Dolls are thrilled to announce their first live tour in 3 years! The pioneering and influential "punk cabaret" duo comprised of Amanda Palmer (piano, vocals) and Brian Viglione (drums, guitar, bass) will be kicking off a few weeks of dates starting on Halloween at Irving Plaza in NYC. The date marks the exact 10th anniversary of the birth of the band (Viglione met Palmer on Halloween night of 2000, at an art/salon party at Palmer's house, at which she was playing her solo songs on piano. "Amanda's songwriting was so brilliant and raw, I couldn't have designed a more perfectly suited counterpart. I knew then I'd found my musical accomplice.", says Viglione. They will also make a stop in New Orleans for a special gulf oil spill relief-benefit for BTNEP, an organization that is working to preserve, protect, and restore the Barataria and Terrebonne estuaries of Louisiana.
Since The Dolls' last performance (which was at Rock The Vote in DC on the Inauguration Day of President Obama), Palmer has been tirelessly busy building her solo career and online empire, centered around the 2008 release of her Ben Folds-Produced solo album "Who Killed Amanda Palmer". The album was accompanied by a hardback-book of the same name and included a collection of dead photographs of Palmer and short stores by author Neil Gaiman (to whom Palmer recently became engaged). Palmer also recently released a donation-based Radiohead covers ukulele EP titled "Amanda Palmer Performs the Popular Hits of Radiohead on Her Magical Ukulele", setting the tech community abuzz about how a donation-based model can earn a mid-level artist a living wage. Before they embark on tour, Palmer will be starring as the Emcee in the American Repertory Theater’s production of Kander & Ebb's dark weimar musical "Cabaret". The production opened August 31, 2010 and runs through October 29. Many of the dates are already sold out. More information can be found HERE www.AmericanRepertoryTheater.org on A.R.T.’s website.
"The time apart has done nothing but given both of us an appreciation of how incredibly special and powerful our band is," says Palmer. "Our live musical chemistry is completely unique, almost magical, and we don't take that for granted. I can't wait to get on a stage with Brian again. Nobody hits the drums like that man - he's in a class all his own. And when we play together live, we create an entire world we can't otherwise create."
Meanwhile, drummer/producer and talented musical jack-of-all-trades Brian Viglione has appeared on 30 albums since 2008, most notably, Nine Inch Nails' "Ghosts I–IV". Viglione's latest hard-hitting album, "Face Of The Sun", which he produced and co-wrote, is available digitally via Bandcamp and will be featured on his new website,brianviglione.com. Amidst the busy recording and teaching schedule, he's toured internationally with The World/Inferno Friendship Society, Franz Nicolay, Black Tape For A Blue Girl, Martin Bisi, Botanica, and The Cliks. "A great strength of the band has always been that we've always given each other time to explore creative areas outside The Dresden Dolls, then bring what we've learned back to the table. Our love for the music and playing together is mirrored by the continual support of our fans, and we're more than ready to deliver the goods to them. "
The current wave of theatrical artists are citing The Dolls and their flamboyant emotional and theatrical antics as an inspiration, from up-and-coming theatrical-pop artist and Dolls’ fan Marina & The Diamonds to Lady Gaga (who lists The Dresden Dolls as an influence on her MySpace).
"It's been really inspiring to see an evolution towards theatrical freedom among indie bands over the last ten years", says Palmer. "When we were starting out in 2000, we were surrounded by the likes of The Vines and The Strokes. People often wrote us off as a gimmick because of our weird theatrical bent. Now we're surrounded by comrades...Antony, The Scissor Sisters, The Decembrists, Arcade Fire, CocoRosie, the list goes on and on. People aren't as afraid take risks onstage. It's inspiring, and I'm proud we've played our little part in the continuum of empowered freaky people."

Hi,
It has been a while. Like they say "time flies when you are not sleeping"! So, what has been going on? The Pumpkins are on tour. The shows seem to be going really great. I was lucky enough to a be "Pumpkin For The Day" and play congas on a few SP songs for "Record Store Day." The show served as the release party for Teargarden By Kaleidyscope and the first 250 Fans that bought TBK at Amoeba Music In Hollywood got to attend a free SP concert that same day. My review of that show comes down to one word "fuckinrad" here is a clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVRvH2-0RtI
After I watched the clip I was brought back to that day of pure bliss. Then i started thinking......
I spent most of the 90's on the road. When I wasn't touring with my band Catherine I was on the road with The Smashing Pumpkins. Hell, I have probably seen more SP shows than most of the band members. Here I am "singing" with the band in 1991 in Milwaukee, Wi. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wEEkb4zBwU and yes, it is best that I stopped drinking. I have shared some amazing moments in time with one of the best rock bands in the world. I know how awesome it is to play in front of 80,000 people with everyone singing along. I also know the torment of picking up the hotel phone at 3Am to learn that your friend, and fellow musician, has OD'd and died. At the end of the day, all you can do is hope for more good times than bad. WOW! It sure is amazing what watching one clip on youtube can do your mind. Well, anyway, after the flood of memories and emotions ran through my body and flew into the cosmos I deiced to check in with Uncle Billy to see how things were going on the tour.
B.C. "I've really enjoyed this tour a lot. There is definitely an overall spirit in Asia that their time in the world has come again to lead. There is a real vibrancy everywhere I have been that is lacking other places I shall not name. This tour for me sort of maps out some of the future for SP, traveling to far away places where people really want to see us. The challenge is in always pointing us towards the future while gently honoring the past. As long as that balance exists, I am happy. And I can honestly say I am as happy right now as I have ever been playing. The most exciting thing for me on this tour has been seeing mostly young faces in the crowds. That tells me that my music is reaching new generations of kids on their own terms. They are there because they are finding something in us in this time, not from some other time. "
Needless to say it makes me happy to hear that the band is having a good time on the road. The next time I see them play will be at this http://www.sunsetstripmusicfestival.com/ I am really looking forward to SSMF. This shit don't happen all the time. Sunset Blvd. will be closed to traffic and bands are going to play on the street. This is big! Check out this video with Nic Adler owner of one of my favorite night clubs in L.A. The Roxy Theatre. If you are in So. Cal. on 8/26-28 you should go.
IN THE STUDIO
We have been super busy at Coldwater Studio working with bands for release on StarTone Records.
